the benitez trade -- should we be happy?

The 2007 San Francisco Giants....

  • ... record when leading after eight innings: 23-0 (tied for best in baseball).
  • ... BA, OBP, SLG and RPG: .251 (24th), .313 (27th), .388 (22nd), and 4.31 (22nd).

You tell me where the problem is.

Look, I'm not sad to see Benitez go, but this move does not get Sabean off the hook. In fact, it just confirms the terrible mistake he made signing Armando in the first place. And here's what Brian Sabean had to say about why he made the trade:

"We are at a crossroads in my mind, and apparently the fans, the press and some people in the clubhouse felt he needed to go."

"Now we're going to find out what they're made of. We'll see who's strong enough to be the whipping boy now. ... We're going to find out who, when and how we're going to step up."

Are you kidding me? Is Brian Sabean saying that he made this deal because the fans forced him to? There's so many things wrong with that, I don't know where to start (but I'll try).
  1. General Managers should never, never make a move based on what the fans want, because what the fans really want is a championship, and the GM should be smarter than the fans. By making this move, Sabean is telling us he trusts public opinion more than his own baseball knowledge... not good.
  2. He seems to be blaming this situation on the fans, media etc. If anyone needs to be the "whipping boy", it's the Giants management, not the media, fans, or (gasp) bloggers.
  3. How about... no one be the whipping boy? Play good baseball... how about that?

trapped in la

I've begun the slow, slow process of moving this little site from blogger.com to my own domain. You can check out my progress here. Like I said, it's a work in progress... I've also put a bunch of pictures up from our road trip here.

with/without zito

When Zito starts: 4-5, 5.13 ERA, 1.1 K/BB.
When ANYONE ELSE starts: 19-17, 3.41 ERA, 1.5 K/BB

Just thought you'd like to know.

play well tonight!

I'm headed to the Giants game in Houston tonight, and after two miserable games the last two nights, I can only hope tonight's game is better! Lincecum vs Oswalt promises to be entertaining, but if Benitez blows a Lincecum gem, I might just vomit.

we're off!

We're off on what will be a nearly two week road trip through the south... for me, the highlight of the trip will be a Giants game in Houston on Thursday (we'll also catch a Rangers game in Dallas). The trip ends on Memorial Day weekend in Huntsville, and then I'm off to Vegas for a couple days.

i'll be posting pics, etc on my family's picture site.

what's going on at yankee stadium?

Did any of you know that this was going on at Yankee Stadium? Chains... I repeat, chains are used to force fans to remain motionless during the playing of the national anthem and God bless America. Are you joking? Does no one else see the irony in this? Restricted freedom, in the name of freedom. Forced "patriotism" is what I'd expect in North Korea, not the Bronx...

thoughts on yesterday's action

The great thing about baseball is, despite the nearly 45,000 games played each year in MLB alone, amazing and rare things happen almost every night.

  • Last night, the Giants scored nine runs in fifth inning. They hadn't scored nine or more runs in a single inning since April 28, 2004 when they dropped nine on the Braves in the fourth inning of a 10-7 win.
  • Before last night, the Giants had scored as many as nine runs in a game just twice.
  • Remember all the flack Paul DePodesta took for the LoDuca/Penny trade (especially from one LA sportswriter who shall remain.... Bill Plaschke)? Well, Penny is 4-0 with a 1.39 ERA is just struck out 14 Marlins. And no one would really argue that LoDuca is a better player than Russell Martin, would they? Good job DePodesta.

this makes me happy

Today, someone from Victorville California found his or her way to my little site by doing a google search for "jesus hates the yankees". I couldn't be more proud.

To quote Conan O'Brien...
